First time in over twelve years of parenting . . .

I was out in 33 degree weather on an early Saturday morning watching my kid's
SOCCER GAME!

The "first time" thing isn't that it was cold, or that it was early, it was that I've taken an odd pride in the fact that I haven't signed my kids up for soccer, ever. I've told myself it's because I'm just not interested in soccer (selfish, right?) but I think fifty percent of the reason is also because everyone and their mother signs their kids up for soccer like it's an absolute "MUST DO" childhood experience. So, I sign my kids up for things like lacrosse instead. Yeah, I know...just shake your head and move on with me...we all have our quirks. (-:

Seems that when one is in 7th grade and their school has a soccer team, they just go and sign themselves up!

Well, lo and behold, it turns out that this morning I discovered I kinda like soccer. It also turns out this morning was my gal's last game of the season...yeah, I know...on we go...

I liked that these kids could really play the game. There was some serious team work going on this morning and a lot of good, concentrated effort. I also liked that I was dressed super warm, and, no offense to the other four, but, I was by.my.self! I really haven't gotten to take in one soccer game this season between chasing the toddler and dealing with the brothers who quite often seem to me like three lion cubs, with the littlest often getting bitten (so to speak).

Here's our gal now, mixing it up with the best of them...

Yeah, you just watch out big number 28. She'll get right in there and snatch that ball before you can say "I've got long, green sleeves."

So, most of you know our gal personally and, unless you've seen her with her brothers, you would not really use the term "aggressive" in the same sentence as her name. But out on the soccer field, let me tell you, she's on fire! Lots of parents on the side lines that know her are continually telling me what a great, aggressive player she is. And, she is! (-:

Did you know...there's a TON of running in soccer!!
(-;

Cropped shot from the team pic.
Won their game today placing them third in the league.
They had an amazing coach this year and a great season.
She's looking forward to playing again next Fall and I'm sure she'll be really fired up when she realizes that her brother will be joining the team too.

Speaking of that brother really quick. Boy, I wish I had a photo to go with this but good old #2 took Cross Country this Fall just because I mentioned it would probably be a good idea in order to stay in shape for hockey (he's only playing hockey once/wk right now). He wasn't old enough for the soccer team yet. So, although running really isn't his bag, he joined, stuck with the entire season without complaining more than a couple times and pulled off a few 1.5 mile runs when all was said and done. I literally had to choke back tears of pride and awe and try to remain composed after his last run of a mile and a half with all these hills because that kid just tries so darn hard, nothing is going to stop him. He so badly didn't want to come in last (which he didn't and hasn't for any race, but one at the start of the season was close), but that run was not a piece of cake for him, yet, he muscled through like a champ passing a number of people at the end. Awesome!
