O.K.!...Fine! . . .

I'LL TURN THE HEAT ON!!!

As per the request of multiple teeth chattering, purple lipped residents of this here homestead, I'm going to cave and admit waking up and going to sleep in a 57 degree house is a little much!

(for someone that has stood on the side of a pool deck in a bathing suit for many 57 degree mornings this cold summer, it's taking me a little longer to admit it's darn cold in here...even if my nose and fingers are freezing!)

Last Saturday . . .

At 9:30p.m. . . .

I used these last treats from the garden . . .
(taken w/SP's cell phone!)

to make this:

Rosy Gazpacho
(Cuisinart Food Processor Recipes)

2 medium cucumbers, peeled, halved lengthwise and seeded

1 medium onion, peeled and quartered

2 medium green bell peppers, cored, seeded and quartered lengthwise

6 firm ripe tomatoes (2 pounds), stemmed, peeled, cored and quartered

2 small garlic cloves, peeled

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cups (720ml) tomato juice

1/8 teaspoon Tabasco sauce

2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Insert slicing disc (of food processor...which I've never used to make an entire recipe like this...I've had it for about 12 years too...it was awesome!). Cut each cucumber section in half lengthwise again, then crosswise, to get 16 pieces in all, each about 3 inches long. Stand them in feed tube vertically. Slice in 2 batches. Transfer to 6-quart mixing bowl.

Insert metal blade and pulse-chop onion until medium-fine, about 4 pulses. Add to cucumbers.

Pulse-chop peppers until medium-fine, about 6 times. Add to mixing bowl.

Pulse-chop 3 tomatoes to chop coarsely, about 5 pulses. Add to mixing bowl. Repeat with 2 more tomatoes, saving remaining tomato for later use.

Turn on machine and drop garlic through feed tube. Process until coarsely chopped. Scrape work bowl and add the 4 remaining tomato quarters. Process into a purée.

Add to mixing bowl.

Add remaining ingredients to mixing bowl and stir well to mix. Cover bowl and refrigerate for 3 hours before serving. Adjust seasoning if necessary.

Makes about 2-1/2 quarts (2.5L).

This made for great lunches well into the week!

Thought I'd counter the last post with a little reality . . .

I'm no Heidi Klum
(and that's just fine with me!).
(-:

So what's the story here?

I've been waiting to post this beaut until I could take a picture of the hardened clay balls that the kids brought home from Lake MI, but since I still can't find the camera (tired of that yet?), I thought I'd just go ahead here already and I think the timing of this one is perfect after the lovely Heidi all bedecked in her fineries.

We discovered a river filled with natural clay on our trip to Warren Dunes in August. All the kids made clay balls, they dried and we brought them home. Of course one of them broke recently here at the house so I decided to toss it in some water and make a clay facial.

Here's the lovely mixture. I smeared it all over my face and let it dry. I do think my skin did feel as smooth as a baby's bottom after the whole process.

However, over the following couple of days when I'd rub my hand on my cheek, it felt like there were little shards of glass or something prickly in my skin. The hypothesis is that the clay opened up the pores and then since it's just directly from the river, perhaps it's not as "clarified" as what they use at a spa, it left behind bits of this and that in my face!
You think?

Found my camera . . .

so I had the kids take a picture of me during school pick-up.

Oh, sorry...I was in a delusional, hormonal state.
That's Heidi Klum at the Emmy's!

(Still no camera)

Trickle Down Theory . . .

Pierce Style

When asked to do something around the house Harrison often replies with "I always have to . . . (whatever the request at the time is)."

So, this morning we've got the littlest guy making that phrase his own:

Place: bathroom
Time: Too early in the day to be dealing with this

Mom: "William, will you please put the seat down and flush the toilet."
William: "I ALWAYS have to put the seat down and flush the toilet!"
Mom: "Yep, and you'll always have to for the rest of your life."
William: Jaw drops in disbelief!

And we commence to sit in the bathroom for a good while. I crack open a book. He sits and whines about how unjust of a request this is and that I should just do it. I continue to read, remember, I will Outwit, Outlast and Outplay the toddler years (here's hoping my strategies will work in the teen years, yikes)!

Postscript: A great way to get one's house cleaned and organized is to loose something in it.
Week 2, no camera!

A Frenchmen's take on doing food in America . . .

I'm still at a loss as to where my camera has gone, so this is what I have for today:

I have a few blogs and one website I check in on, this is the website (though I'm usually at the Food section), and below is an excerpt from an interesting read during nap-time:

Before taking over the Citrus Étoile, in the Eighth Arrondissement, Mr. Epié ran the Los Angeles restaurant L’Orangerie for more than three years. He remembered with distaste the strictness of American health rules about food.

“My fish shop in Santa Monica smelled like a pharmacy” instead of like fresh fish, he said. “And when I asked for a three-month-old baby lamb, like you can find here, they thought I was crazy and nearly called the police.”

Arrgggg!!! . . .

I Can't Find My Camera!

We've got a new incentive plan . . .

kind of like the government,
we're printing up loads of our own money!

Welcome to the concept of the DAD DOLLAR!
(another FamilyFun idea)

Just like any incentive program with kids, you can use Dad Dollars (not sure why they're Dad Dollars and not Mom Dollars...I think I might make some "Mom" ones too) to reward whatever kind of behavior/chores that need a little attention. The article in FamilyFun, which I can't find a link to (Sept. 2009, Creative Solutions), had a lot of different ways to earn the dollars, some kids might need an incentive for reading time, getting ready to go, whatever. I'm using mine to see if we can have more CIVIL CAR RIDES and other basic behavior type things. Payouts are going to be things like a one-on-one game of tennis alone with mom or dad (well, mom, not so much theses days...32 weeks and counting), extra scoop of ice cream for dessert, their choice of a dvd if it's a movie night...stuff like that.

So, we'll see how this works. Just learning as we go here!

Today, after church . . .

at the bagel shop . . .
was the . . .

(check the link for a virtual tour)

Also, double click to get the full glory that are William's "church clothes" today.
He picked them out himself proclaiming "I've got a tie, I look like Dad!"
Needless to say, he got LOTS of compliments at church.

So, what'd you do all summer? Us? . . .

Well, got a minute?
. . . .

JUNE: Our first year joining a swim team

Align Center
Ben's first race. He's a fierce competitor!

Two weeks before the season ended, the boys decided they wanted to join the dive team too.
First and only dive meet of the year.

One eager diver!

Align Center
JULY: Annual trip to the U.P.

AUGUST: E's 40th Birthday Party at G-Ma and G-Pa's.

AUGUST: Few days after the party we ALL head to Lake MI for a few days.

AUGUST: The Pierce Clan tacked on one more night in Western MI with an overnight in the U.S.S. Silversides.

MID-AUGUST: G-ma and Poppie traditionally take their 10 year old grandchildren for a couple nights on Mackinac Island. This year was Lara and Kristin's lucky year!

LATE-AUGUST: A day at Michigan's Adventure!

And with that, the sun has set on another action packed summer full of great memories!

Now this was (mostly) a fun trip . . .

This was the "mostly" part of the fun trip.
Click on to see the full angst. None of us could find his hat when we got out of the car (when we returned he found it stuffed behind his book in the pouch of the seat in front of him!!). After trying to console him for a while, we decided to let him ride out the tantrum on the sidewalk as we all sat on a ledge and waited.
(-:

A highlight of the day .50 cent rides on the People Mover.
We parked at Greek Town and shuttled over to Hart Plaza just so we could ride.

Got off at the Ren Cen stop to check the building out.

Do you know which one does not belong? (-:
It took two of the kids about 1 minute and 32 seconds to decide whether to get full force wet.
Can you guess which two those might have been?

Argg! Picture didn't rotate and I'm not going back to try to fit it in . . .
But, I'm sure you were right on which two went in!

Then we headed toward the riverfront and just as we sat down, with absolutely no timing or agenda on our part, we caught the last tune of the Brubeck Brothers. Sons of the re known jazz leader, Dave Brubeck.

Brubeck Brothers Quartet

When they ended we heard a trumpet player was up next. Turns out Lara wants to choose the trumpet for band this year, so we had to catch this guy. Now, he's got some chops!

So, if you're in town, this was a very (again, mostly (-:) easy trip. The festival itself is FREE. We drove right into Greek Town, parked in an outdoor lot ($5) right by the entrance to the People Mover (.50 per ride/per person), zipped over to Hart Plaza (get off at Millenium Center to be even closer than the Ren Cen) and grooved to some cool jazz. Plus, there are tons of booths of food, crafts, Wii Sports exhibits to play and LOTS of people watching.

Today was just peachy . . .

It is amazing what one can do in their own home when not playing the dual role of Mom/Camp Counselor (again...kids...great time had by all the last three months...I'm just sayin'). Today we met with an insurance agent, played t-ball in the driveway, trimmed a row of hedges, washed out the garbage can and...

Remember that big bag o' peaches? I did end up getting two batches of 6 cups frozen and today decided to make my first peach pie ever (I need practice fluting, I think that's what it's called). Even the gal that says she doesn't like cooked peaches enjoyed two pieces of pie. I picked the kids up from school and we headed right to the lake (only five days left until it closes) for the afternoon and through dinner.
It was a gorgeous day!

Even though the quality is horrible (zooming with my little Cannon) I wanted to share this quintessential "boys at the lake" pic. Someone had a dead snake and they wanted to chuck it back into the lake. Not a girl around!

You'd think they'd at least throw it a little farther away than that!
