Oh, wait . . . super quick before the calendar flips . . .

It's been gourd harvesting time around here!!
Love, love, love the swan neck gourd.
Saved seeds from one a friend gave me last year, extra love!

Then, last Saturday evening after a hockey game, I took one last swim in a lake.
It was brisk.
But fantastic!

The moon and I out at a small, state park lake that I'd never swam in before but a friend of mine told me I must, must, must check it out.

So, in likely our last week creeping into the 70's, I did!
I swam first, left my phone/camera in the car telling myself to just go enjoy, no pics...but alas, I couldn't take it. After my swim I went back to the car, grabbed the phone, reminded myself that one of the kids told me my phone was waterproof and went and floated on my back in the middle of the lake taking pictures.

Just bought these since I've started my Master's swimming back up with some regularity . . . isn't that exciting . . . swimming with some regularity, hope it holds! They're called zoomers evidently and are sometimes used in our workouts in place of flippers for some reason. I liked them for the lake because I have this little thing about thinking fish are going to think my toes are bait whilst I swim about, and flippers are far too much of a production to flop around into the water with, these were perfect and I didn't think about my tootsie's as bait once! (-:

And with that, no more outdoor swimming till next year and bring on October!

Happy Sunday, Confirmation! . . .

It was rescheduled for today from its original May 3rd date.
We all wore masks and sat distanced in pews at the earliest. hour. ever. with just the confirmation families. Different kinda confirmation, but just as meaningful as ever.

William's confirmation verse:
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4

An excerpt from his Statement of Faith:
Through the valley of the shadow of death, our Lord comes to us. Through times of grief and sorrow, we need his encouragement. With temptation we need the Lord to rescue and deliver us. This is why Christ took on our flesh, to live through the struggles, to live through the law and fulfill it. We do not have a God who sits idl and watches us suffer. No, our God comes and takes part of our struggles and lifts the burdens off of our shoulders because He knows how it is to live in our sinful world.

From me today during his portion of the confirmation service:
May the Lord bless you and keep you, William.
May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and Give. You. Peace.

 God Bless You, William.

Today and Always.

Love, Mom

Friday Morning at My House . . .

Three times a charm on my watermelon crop!
(-:
My crop of three watermelons.
(-:
First pick was too early, very light pink inside.
Second pick was too late, mushy, dark red inside and an awful stench.
  . . .

But, pick number three . . .
Just. Right.
(-:

Three apple trees . . . two apples.
Not an apple year at the house.

But I got a watermelon.
Yah-hoo!

Have a great weekend!

"Good Soil" . . .

Ahhhhh . . . right?
That's "my" farmer's field just this very morning.
Ahhhhhhh . . .

Just take the deepest, slowest breath my friends and you might, just might, be able to imagine the scent of  that fresh soil, tilled up and ready for rebirth next planting season.

You know, we can wake up with "fresh soil," cleaned whiter than snow, each and every day as a believer in Christ. You can withstand a muddy, muddy day with twists and turns you just didn't expect by taking a minute to remember that all the muddy days the enemy tries to toss your way have been 100% conquered and cleaned up by our One True Heavenly Father.

We are profoundly blessed!

Happy Sunday! . . .

The Bible tells us that even Christians encounter problems. We may have money problems. We may become seriously ill. We may have family problems. But God is always our fortress. He is on our side in battle. We have His promise that He will help us handle our problems. And above all, we have the gift of eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. The apostle Paul, who suffered many hardships, even martyrdom, told the Romans, “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:18). Excerpt from Concordia Publishing House, “Strength for the Day” mailer...like, in the mailbox! (-:

My friends, I am grateful to have had this idea placed so strongly on my heart and mind five years ago! I am certainly not in a state of suffering over here, but you’ve likely caught the gist occasionally that hardships continue. While I naturally feel the earthly emotions that come along with trials of many kinds, during those times, it is a blessing to be able to walk through them with a stronger foundation of comfort and peace, looking ahead and beyond, that  only our one, true Heavenly Father can offer.

I pray that you too can walk this earthly journey with that same comfort and peace.

God’s
Peace.

Saturday Suprise!

William got to play his first ever HIGH SCHOOL hockey game yesterday and he was given number 11 for this Fall season league. They won 8-3, he got to play the whole game, they had one practice this past Wednesday, they had to wear masks while playing (you try keeping a mask up while playing hockey, haha)!
So awesome to sit in the stands with my dad during such an exciting time for William!

Sorry/Not Sorry . . .

For the excessive pictures of produce!

Between my garden, my neighbor sharing and the farm stand . . .
I may have gone a little bit bonkers!
(but I don't think so)
(-:

Sweet discovery alert . . .

Ran out of colander space with all the tomatoes about and was prepping beat greens for tomorrow's recipe when I stumbled on this great way to wash veggies! Did my tomatoes and onions covered in dirt over this too. Cooling rack over the sink for the win.

Sorry/Not Sorry for the excessive produce pictures!

Portrait Mode is Fun & I Love Zinnias! . . .

And . . . yes, one of the bedrooms does in fact have purple led strip lights (and many other colors to boot, along with self-designed, original colors!) that you can see glowing in the top right of this pic. I'll leave it to you to figure out which of us that would be. (-: I used to have cut out magazine pictures and orange gingham wallpaper "lighting up" my room back in the day. 😂

Looking forward to tomorrow after teaching,
having a Ratatouille party at the house with the kids,
making the famous dish and watching the movie,
I'll leave it to you to figure out which one of us is most excited about this party!
😂

I think I'm making this one . . . after all . . . the internet says it's the Best. (-:

Got Lots of Tomatoes? . . . This is a Lick Your Plate Clean kinda moment!! . . .

So whip up this darling little recipe:

https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015178-marcella-hazans-tomato-sauce

And forget about the fact that when you're emphasizing to all that you really just eat loads of vegetables from your garden all the time and can't understand how the extra pounds still exist . . . that your dad points out your sauces have Lots.Of.Butter.

Just forget about that and enjoy!
(-:

Two pounds of garden fresh tomatoes ready to roll.
(I used the recipe from one of the comments, she cited that this recipe, the original, published back in 1973 used to call for two pounds of tomatoes and 8 tablespoons of butter, not the 5 tablespoons they list today...and I thought to myself..."Self, you're not only from the 70's but you also like to be authentic...so, better use the original recipe!" (-:

One stick of butter ready to roll!
It's crazy how one stick of butter seems so different all melted and blended in with some succulent tomatoes. You kinda forget all about the one stick of butter issue...hahaha!

But hey, I didn't even put that divine sauce on pasta...an evil CARB people!! I got my little grill grate thing out once again and grilled these up, with an added onion after coating them with some olive oil, sea salt and pepper. Poured that delighted full sauce (not all of it!!) over this whole batch of roasted veggies. Oh.My.Goodness!!

But now, 9:32p.m., I have a hankering for a few cinnamon graham crackers dipped in milk.
chow!

anne
The recipe from the first edition of The Classic Italian Cookbook (1973) calls for 2 lbs of tomatoes, 1/4 lb butter, one medium yellow onion, peeled and halved, salt and 1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar. I can't imagine why the amount of butter has been reduced from 8 tablespoons to 5 tablespoons. Stick with the original.

Find Joy in the Ordinary . . .

My new music scheduler.
My last one was titled "Every Moment Counts"
I think "Find Joy in the Ordinary" would make a fabulous blog name. It is, after all, pretty much what I've always done in this little space. I would absolutely switch to it if my current blog name didn't so perfectly and fully represent the gift I've been given to take James 1:2-5 so deeply to heart after these last five years especially.

So, let's get on to some JOY in the ordinary, shall we . . .

Full time teaching for me starts next week. But until then, I managed to fit in two more Masters swims this week and boy oh boy . . . around 3,000 meters...yes, METERS!!...on Wednesday and I'm pretty sure I did 2,900 meters on Friday. I have literally not swam that much in likely seven years or so. It was so, so, so ordinarily fabulous!
(and no, )-: we didn't get to go down the tube slide afterwards!)

Every single thing in this here pan is from my yard! Slowly cooked it all down and then threw some chicken thighs in the middle and cooked those up. Made some fettuccine to accompany it for the kids and wow-wee-wow-wow. I'm quite certain my faithful five (readers) must be quite over me and my garden, but I can't stand it. It's so ordinarily amazing in so many ways! (-:

Have you ever just enjoyed the remnants of some critter enjoying your giant sunflower seeds on your picnic table?
I have.

(-:

Now, go on out and enjoy the ordinary.

Actually, now that I remember it, if you can find some kind of bio section for me on this little ol' blog, I posted about a book I like that speaks to this very topic. Chow!

Four Freshman . . .

2013
At registration two weeks before school started.
For the life of me I can NOT imagine I didn't get my first child's first day of high school picture taken but if it isn't in this blog I can't imagine I got one. Wowza!

2015
Always a great, shining smile!

2017
Red Wings

2020
Day 2
Day 1 was just nutso as I tried to get ready to go teach while he & I tried getting links and schedules to work, not even an inkling of a thought to get a picture. Amazing he got to his 8:30a.m. class by 8:32a.m., well miraculous actually!
Day 2 I just opened the door at 8:32, didn't say a word and took a pic. I was quite certain I wasn't going to get anything with standing, or smiling so it is what it is. Starting school in your bedroom online.
Wowza!

I never really did "first day of school lunches" with the high schoolers, but when freshman number four starts school in his bedroom, wrapped in a blanket and wants some "first day of school wings" for dinner, why not!

I'm glad to have this little compilation of Four Freshman.
Despite it all.
May God Bless you and Keep you William as you start your Freshman year!

How's your year been? . . .

Last week or so I got my hair cut for the first time since late November/early December 2019, don't recall exactly. I usually like a cut before Christmas and Easter.

Ha!

I have long hair so ponytails combined with Covid wasn't the biggest deal in the world on the extended delay, but when we get to the ponytails not pulling their weight anymore, it's really time for a cut.

So, I got it scheduled and had the cut a couple weeks ago. Gonna be an interesting Christmas look off of this August cut! (-:

One thing really surprised me though as I sat in the chair that I sit in only twice a year as it is, for maybe the last ten years or so.

Cliffton, my hair stylist who's actually been nominated for an Emmy for cutting hair in the movies (lah-dee-dah!), asked me how my year has been after filling me in on how it's gone with the cancer he'd just been diagnosed with at our last appointment.

Without a pause from the ending of his question, out of my mouth came, "Well, pretty peaceful and relaxing actually."

"I got to be with my kids a lot, not running around everywhere, be in my yard growing the gardens, I kept lots of my students and figured out online teaching. So, yeah, you know . . . "

But a few times since then it's struck me that my instinctive answer was,
"pretty peaceful and relaxing actually."

Because, well . . .

What?? We're in a world-wide PANDEMIC!! You've had a son die! Your next teen son is in a complete life shut down and not receiving the care he needs living away from your home and now another son is beginning high school!  You've cried to the wind for the second one, just like the first one, again for an entire year to no avail! The younger kids schooling is all messed up! No one can do their sports or hang out easily in large groups, you had to wear a mask at the campground for heaven's sake! Everyone's on the computers all.day.long. You had your beloved intact family taken away from you without discussion amidst such bizarre darkness and you're a single mom who's largest budget item is diligently set aside for car repairs!!

"Well, pretty peaceful and relaxing actually."

?????????

Yep.

Lake Superior 2020

Where can that response come from for anyone in a world of trials and tribulations?

Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

A while later during the cut, kinda under his breath and very unexpected, while I don't even remember what we were talking about, he said, "You're my hero." I said, "What was that?" "You're my hero, " he said. "Oh, um thanks, but it's really not me."

A New Kinda Labor Day Weekend! . . .

Well . . . this memorial to the Battle of Fallen Timbers is a HUGE hop, skip and a jump from our many, many years history of "ending summer" like this: http://pierceadventures.blogspot.com/2018/09/last-leap-of-summer.html

But when your 14 years, treasured family lake is closed for the summer due to Covid (still no idea why that was the case exactly, except it's a private family run lake with elderly owners who check everyone in on their clipboard...oh, that's probably why) . . . you get to travel to have adventures with your "away-at-college" daughter and the youngest sibs!
Yah-hoo!

Stopped at this battlefield on our way to our first stop, dinner with Lara, since she just let us know she'd be a little later arriving home than she originally thought. Perfect and interesting little diversion.

Arrived "at school," met Lara for dinner and archery in the backyard. Hahaha, that was an unexpected add on!  She and her great friend and roommate found this bow and arrow in a park one day and it hangs on the living room wall...naturally. Liva and William took a spin shooting at a board propped up in the trees especially for this purpose before we headed another hour south to our landing spot for the next couple of days.

Second time here!
Turkey Run State Park
Has an Inn from the Roosevelt era of New Deal State and National Park building projects. We stayed in the Inn the first time we were here a few years ago as well as camped in the campground and this time we got a cabin.
If you got a cabin, you also got to use the Inn's amenities.
When arriving on a Thursday night before Labor Day weekend that meant Liv and I had the whole pool to ourselves. An INDOOR pool nonetheless. During the time of Covid, that's been unheard of in our state, though, I've heard they're opening this coming week!

Our cabin.
(-:

First morning, letting the kids sleep in, sat out at the firepit till the bugs got the best of me.
Fabulous, cool, sunny weather.

I love, love, love that only five hours south of us is this dramatically different terrain. You see, we're used to driving 10 hours north and not exploring anything like this. We're pretty much always going north or west in our own state...low and behold what five little hours south will bring ya!

One of the hardest parts of the trip was trying to keep this boy off the walls.
Wowza!

See William at the bottom right?

Day one we hiked Trail 6 behind our cabin.
Never got to that one the first time we were here.
Great hike with pretty empty trails still.

An exciting feature of this park is the suspension bridge.
One reason we came again was because we didn't get onto the water during our first trip and we planned to tube it this year. Bummer was that the term "low and slow" was thrown about at a lot of the tube rental places and also was heard, "we're not even renting tubes because the water's so low." )-:  It was a bummer, but not a bust. The park has such incredible trails, waterfalls (light on water at this time of year), ladder climbs up the face of huge boulders, and of course the Punch Bowl and the Ice Box (just go and find out (-:) that you just can't be disappointed.

William and I on the veranda after dinner.
Loved writing that.
(-:

Lara arrived Friday night after classes and flight instruction.
We planned to head to tubing Saturday morning but because of "low and slow" they slept in an I made my way through my 365 Days through the Bible readings (I was behind a few days).

I got a couple group shots of us.
(Notice how I expertly cropped out my long white socks, capri pants, black tennis shoes look . . . on top of the hat hanging from the water bottle holder, I can NOT believe at least one of the kids didn't inform me how ridiculous I looked! One of these days I need to stop and take a quick look in the mirror before leaving, wow!)
The kids though didn't like my approach to asking for photographic help, which I thought was perfectly appropriate:
"Oh, hi, excuse me . . . if it's not a Covid problem for you, would you mind taking our picture?"
One of them felt I didn't need to add the Covid thing.
One of them felt I shouldn't have my phone two inches from them when asking.
One of them graciously said nothing.
Haha!

So, so thrilled to have been able to find this time with Lara.
Been waaaayyyy too long!

Lara and Liv crossing the river with shoes off rather than risking the three foot wide suspension bridge walk with the hoards of people that suddenly invaded our tranquil paths on Saturday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend! Some were masked, William was, most were not. Here's hoping that fresh Indiana air kept us all safe & healthy, oy!

One of the "paths" while hiking trail 3.
Trail 3 has it's own t-shirts in the gift shop.
"Survivor" logo/font . . . "I survived Trail 3" being one of them.
I think Trail 3 took us between 2-3 hours, the end became a bit of a haze.
Did I seriously climb  down the face of the cliff into the Ice Box, parched with jello legs, grabbing roots to get back out, at hour 2.5?
Yep!

Posing at the Punch Bowl.
Last time we were here, it was empty and we splashed an frolicked in the actual Punch Bowl, this time, too many people and low, muddy water in the Bowl. All good though.

I have way too many of these kinds of pics for my own well-being.
Lara did end up scampering up right behind him seconds after this shot at least. Not sure how many people's hike was interrupted by "You come down here RIGHT.THIS.MINUTE William!"

Near the end,
after conversation was had about which Kardashian each member of our family would be, hahaha, the kids decided it'd be fun to "play mom" and look in awe at leaves with "the hat" on.

Headed back to the college town to wind down with some ice cream at a local fav.
Had it not been for my mild inkling to loose some pounds finally, I would have gotten a big ol' double of this baby . . . You Are What You Eat would have absolutely fit the moment!
I ended up with a carrot/mango freeze.
It was still good.
(-:

Then today, back home, I got to make Ben's favorite meal, skillet goulash, with homegrown tomatoes and onions (which Liv and William said they were NOT going to like and ended up eating the whole "serves four"!) and snack on cucumbers and peas throughout the day.

Were there squabbles and nitpicking and "I'm tired's" and mosquito bites along the way?
Yep.
But you lace those with moments on the veranda, a quiet breakfast with just the girls, and all the rest and you've got a "New Kinda Labor Day Weekend!"

So Grateful Always.

Last minute addition:
Ben's Favorite Goulash
(Today I also used fresh basil instead of dried and it was great as was using fresh tomatoes. I read that two cups fresh, plus as much juice as you can save, equals between the 14.5-16oz canned. Sometimes I'll dice carrots into it because my memory sees carrots in my mom's goulash, not sure if that's accurate. I use a variety of different noodles, most often elbow noodles, again childhood memory)
